Samobor offers an ideal combination of the urban and the natural providing the possibility to enjoy both the richness of its gastronomy and cleanliness of its fresh air. At one point in time a great number of gentlemen visited Samobor in order to enjoy the mild climate and fresh, beneficial air. One of them was Antun Gustav Matoš.
The great Croatian writer probably took the route next to the Samobor museum and the walkway by the Gradna stream which leads all the way to the foot of hill where the Old Town is located. It is hard to imagine today, but at that time the entire walkway was just a small muddy path through the woods, while today it is possible to enjoy the walk clean and even push the prams all the way to Vugrinščak. The popular “dream meadow” offers a children’s playground, a place to walk your pets and, in the summer, a refreshment in the newly refurbished swimming pools open from the morning to 8:30 p.m., while in the winter, the slope from the Old Town in the back is ideal for sledging and in the spring you can mingle on the events such as Saint George’s Day celebrated with a huge bonfire.
Those in a better shape can take the path from Vugrinščak into the woods towards the Old Town. After passing the spring, the slope gets steeper but there are only ten more minutes on foot to get to the ruins of the Old Town. Even today the Old Town echoes the power it had in the Middle Ages, but the entrance into the walls is on your own responsibility.
If you descent from the Old Town, return to Vugrinščak and cross the Gabrek’s bridge you can go further towards the wooden chapel of Saint Michael. For those eager to climb further more there is a path in the opposite direction leading to Anindol, to the most famous Samobor chapel – the chapel of Saint Anne and to the chapel of Saint George and the nearby viewpoint, the Pyramid, before returning to the main town square.
