Saint Michael’s Chapel

Probably the most beautiful Samobor church, mysterious and definitely one of the oldest.

Saint Michael’s Chapel

According to many, the most beautiful Samobor church, mysterious and definitely one of the oldest, Saint Michael on Taborec has maybe been the place of prayers since the 13th century if we take into account the window made in the Romanesque period and the wall painting with Middle Ages crosses discovered in the church during research. Official records date back to 1536 and it used to be a parish church with an adjoining cemetery.

This church is an atypical example of the Gothic chapel which was updated in the Baroque style in the 17th century and whose Baroque altar has been preserved, while the painting of Saint Michael Archangel is one of the oldest remaining paintings from the early Baroque. The main altar has been dedicated to Saint Michael and was made by Ivan Komersteiner at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century. Located below the Old Town it used to be the place of conflict between local inhabitants and noblemen, while in the recent period it is the meeting place of the Samobor poets at the annual gatherings “At the Saint Michael”. The church is in the first category of listed heritage.
