Saint Vitus’ Chapel

The church shows an interesting mix of Gothic and Baroque elements.

Saint Vitus’ Chapel

The chapel located on Vrhovčak is believed to be one of the oldest churches in Samobor, dating back maybe even from the middle of the 15th century. Officially, the most probable year is 1564, which is carved into the church bell. The church also has a wall painting behind the main altar with the Sudarium with Christ’s head and the inscribed year 1580.

Regardless of the exact year, the church shows an interesting mix of Gothic and Baroque elements because it was renovated in the 18th century. As a result, the interior of the chapel dates mostly from the 18th century, while the shrine is originally Gothic, together with individual elements in other parts of the chapel such as the main entrance portal and a window in the eastern part of the chapel. This Gothic church renovated in Baroque style holds an artistically valuable painting of Saint Vitus from the 17th century.
