Sports fishing is often called recreational fishing because the point is in finding and catching fish with the equipment for sports fishing and not for eating or selling fish.
The Bregančica Stream is divided into three areas (1, 2 and 3) and each follows a different regime. Each of the areas is marked with panels carrying instructions on how to behave during fishing.
Area 1 covers the area from the source to the beginning of the reserve in Gabrovica (the mouth of the Mala Vodica Stream) and is located in the Žumberak - Samoborsko gorje Nature Park. Here, fishing is allowed only with artificial flies and fly equipment. Hooks bigger than 14 are not allowed. The use of hooks with counter-hooks is prohibited, and the season lasts from 1 May to 30 September.
Area 2 begins in Gabrovica behind the reserve (mouth of the Usklopec Stream, near the restaurant “Gabrovica”), stretching to the high waterfall in Grdanjci. Only artificial flies and fly equipment are allowed here as well. It is allowed to catch rainbow trout, only two fish a day, with the minimum size of 30 cm. In some instances, you can keep only one fish of the trophy size, heavier than 2 kg. The season also starts on 1 May and ends on 30 September.
Area 3 stretches from the magnificent waterfall in Grdanjci all to way to the mouth in the Sava River. Fishing is allowed only with artificial baits and flies and cheaters equipment. No butterfly cheaters smaller than 2 cm are allowed. Fishing is limited to two fish a day, with a minimum size of 30 cm for brown and rainbow trout. The season starts on 1 April and ends on 30 September.
Each fish, regardless of size, must be let go, according to the system “catch and release”. It is prohibited to catch crabs.
During a single day, you can fish only in one of the areas of the Bregančica Stream.
